What are Bolas De Fraile?

Bolas De Fraile are also known as Berlin and although many may have tried if you have traveled to Argentina or have bought food from this country in your city, you have to know that its origin is located in Germany.
The Bolas De Fraile are actually a kind of dough, and I say that at first glance remember our traditional fritters, and usually filled with creams or jam.
The origin of this rich dessert we found in 1756 in Germany when a young man who wished to serve as the gunner of Frederick the Great was not admitted in the army, although he was put as a campaign baker of the regiment so that to thank the gesture invented this mass that was shaped like a cannon ball and that the lack of oven was finished elaborating in a frying pan with lard.

From there it became very popular in all East Germany and over the years ended up becoming a recipe that came to countries like Argentina where they renamed as “Friars de Fraile” because they remembered the tassels hanging from the garb of the Fraíles
Its elaboration is quite simple because we just have to prepare the dough, fry in plenty of oil, or butter, although I recommend the first, and then fill with jam or if you prefer it can be filled with cream or even sweet milk, which is as most have been popularized in Argentina.

How to make Bolas De Fraile – step by step

The first thing you have to do is mix the flour, salt and sugar in a bowl. Once we have the dough well mixed (you can mix by hand or with the help of the whisk), you add the milk, the warm water (with the yeast), the oil and the essence of vanilla.
We have to mix until you see that you have left a homogeneous and smooth dough. We let it rest and we check it doubles its size.
Once the dough is ready, we check that there are no remains that are not uniform and start making balls with the hands.
We let them rest a little longer and then fry them in a frying pan with plenty of oil (at medium temperature) until we see that they have been gilded.
We remove from the frying pan and put them on a plate with absorbent paper so that it can absorb all the oil.
We take each ball we make a small cut in the middle and fill it with a little cream, jam or dulce de leche. You can help yourself with a cake sleeve to make it better.
To finish sprinkling on them a little sugar and ready! Now you can enjoy your Bolas De Fraile. Enjoy!
